Mr. Henry,

I found your blog by Google Alert, which seemed to amuse Mr. Bill Willoughby, who told me he was one of those people you mentioned.

All I want to add is that the underlying problem with Sister Diane’s viewpoint is that it is based on her ‘beliefs.’ She has made her decision that the School of the Americas and this successor institute have caused criminal behavior based on the fraudulent assertions of a political movement. There is no evidence whatsoever that anyone ever used what he learned at the school to commit a crime–none! SOAW asserts that any association with the school is proof that it taught wrongdoing.

The irony of Sister Diane’s arrest and conviction is that on any day, she could have come to one of the visitor centers of Fort Benning, showed a photo ID, and had free access to the entire post, including WHINSEC. If it were a workday, she could have sat in any of our classes, talked with anyone here, and reviewed our instructional materials. She came on Fort Benning for the express purpose of getting arrested. Now she has a federal conviction and for what? Nothing more than two or three news stories in the Cleveland area. There’s the crime; SOAW gets her to do something detrimental to her, just to get a little publicity.

You too are welcome to visit and evaluate the institute for yourself. Dan Rather came in November; his report on HDnet starts Tuesday night at 8pm. Scholars have come and stayed for up to a month, doing research. We are open and proud of our contributions to our country and to our neighbors.

Bigotry and Prejudice
February 13, 2009

Hi Reader,

On Friday’s Heart and Soul, my segment on how Cleveland women are fighting bigotry and prejudice with their “Interfaith Fellowship”.  The group has been around for 50 years and consists of Jews, Muslims and Christians.

It’s amazing how well these women work together and it makes me wonder why such programs cannot become models for regional, national and even global harmony.

Want to see my Friday 6pm Heart and Soul story on this?  Just click on the following web link: ______

And don’t forget to send me your comments on this subject.  Just write me at henry@newsnet5.com.

Thanks,

Ted

Dear Reader,

In presenting both sides of the story I want to call your attention to the following letter I received.  It is from the Public Affairs Officer of the US Army’s training program for foreign soldiers.  Read the preceeding couple of blog posts to bring you up to speed with this story and with Sister Diane’s arrest for tresspassing on government property and I think you’ll begin to get a fuller picture of this complicated story.

Email me your comments or questions to henry@newsnet5.com.

Sister Diane Update
February 9, 2009

Hi Reader,

Sister Diane, an Ursuline nun here in Cleveland, is going to jail for protesting the U.S. military practices which she claims directly or indirectly led to the death of Ursuline Sister Dorothy Kazel in 1980 in El Salvador.  If you’re interested in learning more about this there are dozens, if not hundreds of stories about Dorothy Kazel’s death.  Just insert her name into any search engine to learn more.

Below is the email sent me this week from Sister Kazel’s brother.  I thought you might like to see it.  More info about Sister Kazel and Sister Diane can be found on the previous blog posting.

Thanks, Ted

Mr. Henry,

Thank you for remembering Sr. Dorothy Kazel.  While it has been a while since her passing, it is obvious that her spirit is still alive in the heart and soul of my Clevelanders.  My mother, Dorothy Chapon Kazel, has recently published a second book including letters exchanged between Sr. Dorothy and family members during her mission in El Salvador.  It is called The Voice and actually my brother Daniel and I will be giving a presentation on Wednesday afternoon of this week about the book and her mission.  The both of us had the opportunity of visiting El Salvador and will be sharing our experience and memories of our Aunt.  If you are interested in attending, I would be happy to forward the information and location.

As my parents, Dorothy and Jim Kazel (Sr. Dorothy’s Brother), celebrate this weekend their 50th wedding anniversary, we can only believe that Sr. Dorothy is watching over them and will indeed be with us in spirit during our weekend celebration with family and friends.

Again, thank you for remembering Sr. Dorothy Kazel!

Ursuline Nun Headed For Prison
February 6, 2009

Hi Viewer,

On my weekly, Heart and Soul story, I’m telling the account of Sister Diane Therese Pinchot.  She’s an Ursuline nun from Cleveland who was arrested and sentenced to a federal prison for 60 days for trespassing.

Sister Diane told me she was protesting the alleged practices of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation located at Ft. Benning, Georgia.  She believes El Salvadoran soldiers trained there were responsible for the death of her friend and missionary, Sister Dorothy Kazel of Cleveland.  Sister Kazel and three other women missionaries where captured and killed by Salvadoran National Guardsmen in El Salvador in 1980.

The purpose of her protest?  Sister Diane claims the two officers who ordered the killings have yet to be charged for their involvement.  As I was preparing this story for broadcast, two people with former ties to the U.S. military called to suggest no laws were broken by the U.S. Government or Military and that Sister Diane’s protest puts the U.S. military in a poor light.

The U.S. government denies foreign soldiers are trained in our country to commit criminal activity, but Sister Diane disputes this claim.  She was arrested on November 23rd, 2008 for her role in an illegal protest at Ft. Benning.  She hopes her protest will speed up the closing of these training programs on U.S. soil.

Would she do this again, if given the chance?  Sister Diane said she would and  that she does not fear jail.

The Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation trains foreign soldiers at it’s Ft. Benning installation.  It used to be called the U.S. army School of the Americas.  Sister Diane believes that under President Obama this school could soon be closed.  Efforts to close it before were just narrowly defeated.

Mr. Henry

Since the bailout money that has been handed to the banking establishments, with no restrictions & we know that the money is trickling up and not down.PLEASE, PLEASE don’t give them anymore. give it to the people of the United States at least they will pay on their credit cards, home loans & buy goods that is how we get this turned around.

As can be seen by the banking industry they are not helping homeowners. We have tightened our budget by not buying or going out, since we will need that money to pay our gas, electric, water, house pmt, & gasoline for our car.Our 38 anniversary is in the end of January we use to go out to dinner & a show, now I will make dinner at home & watch TV.

PlEASE,PLEASE give the money to the people & the people will let the money trickle up.

To Ted,

My name is Derin Akyar and my girlfriend, Jessica Miller,  and I saw Kujo on GMA this morning and we both fell in love with him! We are both young professionals (28 and 26 respectively) and have been on the quest to rescue a pup and bring him/her into our home.

While Jessica has always been partial to rescuing a greyhound, I’ve always wanted a mix and we’ve never been able to agree.

This morning, when we flipped on GMA, the first image we saw was Kujo and we both, in unison said “I WANT HIM!”

Unbeknownst to us, Kujo is looking for a home and unbeknownst to Kujo, we’d be perfect for him!

I apologize for mailing all the anchors at your local affiliate, but I was worried that the message i posted on GMA’s website would just fall into the abyss of letters posted by other interested parties and I just wanted to affirmatively and clearly express our great interest in Kujo!

Jessica and I live in a 3 story historic rowhome in downtown harrisburg, PA and there would be plenty of room for Kujo to play and be happy! We also have a Toyota  4runner with plenty of room for Kujo to accompany us to the beach or on hikes or even up to the mountains when we go snowboarding!

We are a very responsible and active couple and love to spend time outside which includes frequently jogging/walking along the susquehanna river which is just a block away from our house which we are sure Kujo would just love.

Our friends and family all have dogs, and we are certain that all those pups would love to have an addition to the pack!

Jessica and I are a very loving and happy couple and want very much to be able to rescue Kujo.

If you would please consider us, we promise to love Kujo and take very good care of him and keep him warm, happy, safe and most importantly loved for the rest of his life.

Thanks so much!

My cell phone number is 609-233—–

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you decide to give us the honor of bringing Kujo into our home.

While I understand that giving Kujo to a cute kid would make for a great news story, but allowing us to bring Kujo into our home would make for a great life story for Kujo.

Thanks again.

Ted,
Rather than a stimulus package, as was done in the past, how is this for a thought……

One week out of every month, for a year, sales tax for items such as clothing, electronics, etc.  should be eliminated.   The money that would have been sent out to taxpayers, would then go to the states for the amount that the states would have taken in during the “no sales tax week.”

This would force Americans to STIMULATE the economy rather than paying off debt on their credit cards.

Have you heard this idea in the past?….I haven’t
